I haven't even gotten to the worst part yet: the game world. There's a point of no return moment late into the game where I genuinely decided which side to pick via coin flip, because I couldn't decide which side I disliked less. The story itself is ludicrously melodramatic with zero nuance to it whatsoever, and all of the factions involved are highly unlikeable. Dragon Age 2 is mostly a game where you just randomly run into things happening around you, and being forced to get involved for no discernable reason. Without getting into the details, there is no reason for your character to even get involved in the actual plot after Act 1. Every single fight in the entire game is like this.
You'll clear a room of enemies, and then an entire new wave of enemies will come out of nowhere to attack you. There's no strategy or positioning involved because you can't. Every single fight, every single one, is a mini wave defense mission. To make matters worse, the encounter design in the game is terrible. Like a Michael Bay Transformers movie if the explosions were tiny and the robots stayed in vehicle mode most of the time. No, it actually has the generally more subdued gameplay of a typical RPG, just dumbed down to the point that it's hard to even pay attention to.
It's not like Bayonetta or God of War where the hacking and slashing is an exciting visual spectacle. The combat is a mind-numbing hack 'n slash in the worst way. Bear in mind the game came out the same year as Witcher 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game looks almost cartoonish and it makes the game difficult to even take seriously at times, which is a bit of a problem when tonally the game itself is quite dark. DA2 completely botched the design of the Darkspawn (the primary enemies from the first game), who were once quite frightening and formidable in appearance. Every single aspect of this game is a disappointment.
